The Gower, St. Georges
Built in 1873 as a community hospital for the local miners, the Gower has served many purposes, including as a school and youth centre.
But following a sensitive restoration, the Grade II listed Victorian building will now provide new homes, offices for the parish council and a community venue.
Nuplace has worked with Telford & Wrekin Council and St Georges and Priorslee Parish Council to deliver a sensitive and innovative regeneration scheme, which protects and brings the existing Gower building back into use and provides contemporary and sustainable homes within Telford and Wrekin.
There will be 13 homes within the development, including three 2 bedroom homes within the southern wing of the existing building as well as ten 2 bedroom new build homes to the rear. Two of our new build properties come equipped with electric car chargers, with additional communal car charging points within the community centre facilities, supporting people to switch to low carbon means of transport.
The key elements of the scheme are as follows:
A new Parish Office and community space are being delivered for St Georges & Priorslee Parish Council - refer to the area shaded green on the site plan for details. As a result, the Parish Council will move from their existing offices at St Georges C of E Primary School, allowing the school to significantly enhance the educational facilities available to pupils, with more flexibility around their accommodation.
Nuplace has worked with Telford & Wrekin Council’s heritage specialist and appointed architect, Wood Goldstraw Yorath, to refine plans for the building ensuring that the external and internal appearance and features of the Gower are preserved as far as possible. At the same time the plans ensure that the existing building is functional and as well insulated as possible to enhance comfort when in use and avoid occupants facing high energy bills and experiencing fuel poverty.
A new children’s play park has been built in St Georges as a part of Telford & Wrekin Council’s refurbishment of the iconic Gower building. Located off Marrion’s Hill the new enhanced play park facilities replace the existing play area at The Gower. Equipment includes both existing and new play equipment for residents to enjoy.
The park was completed in Autumn 2022.
Nuplace contributed £50,000 towards this re-provision through the S106 agreement associated with their planning consent.
